Bellingham Neighborhoods
The city of Bellingham is located in the Northwest corner of Washington State. Bellingham's formation, as a city, is very unique and intersting. There are 23 neighborhoods or districts within Bellingham and many of these have their own Neighborhood Association. These Neighborhood Associations are not homeowner's associations with dues and CC&R's. They are simply associations that interface with the City of Bellingham on issues that affect the quality of life in each neighborhood. As a group all of these neighborhoods form up the Association of Bellingham Neighborhoods (ABN). ABN and most of the individual neighborhood associations have monthly meetings that are open to the public. A list of Bellingham neighborhoods has been provided below. There are links to each neighborhood's web-site (if on-line) along with statistical information on Bellingham Real Estate and Bellingham homes for sale mentioned for each neighborhood.
Alabama Hill Neighborhood's hilltop location provides panoramic views of the city and Bellingham Bay to the west or awesome territorial views of Lake Whatcom to the east. Alabama Hill is well established neighborhood with a wide range of styles and ages of homes in this area but the majority of the homes are 1960's and 1970's vintage homes. Homes throughout the area have access to Whatcom Falls Park at the south end of the Alabama Hill neighborhood and Big Rock Park to the east. The Barkley Neighborhood could be said to be one of the fastest expanding areas of Bellingham. The Barkley Neighborhood lies north and east of downtown and includes the Barkley hill area and subdivisions such as SpyGlass a higher end area with distant salt water views. It has so much to offer and you may not have to leave this neighborhood for anything! For those that enjoy relatively flat topography for easy walking and biking, Birchwood maybe a good Bellingham Neighborhood to consider. Columbia Neighborhood is quiet and primarily made up of many character homes from the late 1800's to 1940's and 50's . This neighborhood is the second oldest neighborhood in Bellingham and the Columbia district has a strong sense of community. It's difficult to drive through the area and not see Columbia residents out talking with each other. Unlike most Bellingham Neighborhoods, Columbia is a relatively flat section of town which makes it a great area to walk and bike. Cordata/Guide Meridian Neighborhood this neighborhood expands North and West and hosts large retail chains such as Bellis Fair Mall, Best Buy, Petco, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Costco to name a few. In addition, to having extensive retail accommodations, the Cordata/Guide Meridian neighborhood not only has single-family homes but multi-family and senior living available. Several nice condo complexes in the area as well. Most of the homes in this are are newer homes and this area is one of the few areas in Bellingham where new construction is occurring at this time. Cornwall Park Neighborhood is very well known and consists largely of single-family homes. At the heart of this neighborhood is Cornwall Park that hosts a large playground, a variety of trails, tennis courts, picnic areas, ball fields, etc all in wooded surroundings. The park is very well known and is centrally located within Bellingham city limits. Homes in Cornwall Park very in age from the early to mid 1900's. This Bellingham neighborhood has the character of an established neighborhood and has great access to I-5 as well as Bellingham's Bellis Fair Mall. Downtown Bellingham (Central Business District) this area is really thriving and has so much to offer anyone. Not only does the area support a number of Urban dwellings but is also the home to many local businesses and shops. On the weekend, you will find our local farmer's market. Obviously as this is a downtown area there are few if any single family homes in this district, however there are a number of downtown Bellingham condominiums. Many of the buildings have some form of commercial use on the ground floor with residential condos on the upper floors. There are plans and project underway to convert the old GP site into a sprawling and upscale waterfront.
Edgemoore Neighborhood is a much sought after neighborhood. In this area with you will find upscale homes with well maintained properties and parks. The Edgemoor Neighborhood/district sits just south of Fairhaven. Edgemoore is one of Bellingham's most sought after and prestigious areas, sloping up from the shores of Puget Sound a high percentage of the homes in Edgemoore have unobstructed saltwater views. Fairhaven Neighborhood is located on the southern end of Bellingham and shares one of its boarders with Bellingham Bay. The downtown area of Fairhaven is bustling with activity and commerce with many local shops, restaurants, tradesmen and hosts its very own farmer’s market. This is also the resting spot & host for the last leg of the famous Ski-to-Sea race each year in May. This neighborhood is a mixture of urban living condos and businesses. In Fairhaven proper there are only a few single family homes and most of those are found along the southern edge of the district. Happy Valley Neighborhood is a melting pot of of diversity. In this Bellignham neighborhood your also have the interurban trail leading to the waterfront and down Chuckanut - great for hiking or biking. Irongate Neighborhood. This is the industrial neighborhood of Bellingham. The Irongate Neighborhood is about 900 acres in size. It's located east of I-5 and north of Sunset Drive to the northern city limits. The King Mountain Neighborhood is located to the west and the Barkley Neighborhood is to the south. Irongate is zoned almost entirely for industrial development (821 acres) and is characterized by industrial and some commercial development (3 acres) in the Irongate industrial area and along Hannegan Road. The area has become one of the major employment centers in Bellingham. The balance of the land in the neighborhood (76 acres) is zoned Public, including Sunset Pond and open space along the Squalicum Creek corridor.
King Mountain Neighborhood lies northeast of downtown and out near the Cordata and Bellis Fair Mall area but east of the Guide Meridian. As a result of a recent annexation into the City of Bellingham, there is some new construction going on in this Bellingham Neighborhood. As one goes up the hillside there are some homes with great city, Puget Sound and mountian views. However, most of the new homes are at the foot of the hill near Bakerview and are not "view" homes. Lettered Streets Neighborhood is family oriented, and friendly! The homes in this Bellingham neighborhood were built in the early 1900’s to 1950’s. You are just a short jaunt to Whatcom Falls Park & Lake Whatcom from this Bellingham neighborhood. Silver Beach Neighborhood a cute neighborhood which is just inside the city limits of Bellingham and rest along the western edge of Lake Whatcom. Historically Silver Beach was the site of an amusement park and well as docks for shipping natural resources down a short rail line to the waterfront.
